STATE OF THE LASAGNA 2019-04-11 Progress this week has been almost nonexistent. I've been back from the IFF, and had to go two days to Edinburgh for Conpulsion. Which was awesome. The next two days, work. So until yesterday I've had one day off in 13 days, and was feeling hella drained. Tuesday I've also had a colleague being overly nasty at me, and I had a meltdown. He has an history of shaming me in front of everybody at work, mocking me because I'm short during standup meetings, mocking my accent, constant backseat driving, ignoring request of feedback on merit when I do things the way he likes them, and constant aggressive behaviour. Also, when I made a configuration error, he called me "punk" in front of the whole team. When, in disbelief, I asked what he called me, he repeated "PUNK" louder. Yesterday I was off. Today is the day I call HR because I'm tired of this bullshit, and might quit because fuck this bullshit. I have enough independent income to survive, I guess this is what I need to do more software and games.
Paolo Greco @ 2019-04-11 08:48:05
Also I'm quite frankly scared of this guy
Christian Buggedei @ 2019-04-11 09:16:31
The person you describe is a certifiable arsehole, and HR should fire him. This is the sort of person that ruins teams and companies, thinking they are rockstars. But often enough, HR is useless. If they are, sue them. Get witness statements, SUE THEM!
Christian Buggedei @ 2019-04-11 09:18:11
also, Karen gives sort-of-legal advise: Don't threaten to quit, that puts you in a bad position. Instead, tell them that this is illegal discrimination and that they could indeed face a bad lawsuit, even if you yourself keep shtum.
Harley Stroh @ 2019-04-11 09:29:15
I don’t have solutions but can offer sympathy. That is a shit way to feel at work. I am sorry you have to deal with this bullshit.
Mamading Ceesay @ 2019-04-11 10:24:15
This is a clear case of bullying and the company has a legal duty of care towards you.
Mamading Ceesay @ 2019-04-11 10:24:50
Karen's advice sounds good to me.
Donald Welsh @ 2019-04-11 10:30:57
Sorry to hear you've been through that. A bit of advice: document everything. Every time he says/does something, make a quick note of the date, place, and if possible approximate time. Not to get anyone into trouble, but for your own sanity & self-protection. It shows the magnitude of the problem, that you're seeing a pattern and not imagining things, and when the shit hits the fan it's the kind of evidence that's persuasive because it's hard to fake.
Richard G @ 2019-04-11 12:13:17
Joining the chorus here. That seems legally actionable. The accent stuff I guess is on the rise because of Brexit - does he himself sound hilariously like Billy Connolly? Also, is this guy your boss?
Handy Haversack @ 2019-04-11 12:24:12
Christ, what an asshole! I hope they shitcan him right into the Clyde. *We* love you, Paolo!
Mamading Ceesay @ 2019-04-11 13:46:27
As for Lasagna, despite a slowdown in new features and bugfixes, it has clearly gained traction with its self-selecting community and will no doubt go from strength to strength. Thank you for giving us this G+ escape capsule!
Robbert Raets @ 2019-04-11 15:34:10
Joining the choir; do what you need to do for your own well-being, Paolo! We can wait for updates.
Rocio Goodey @ 2019-04-11 16:06:12
Agree to all the things. Take care of yourself. That means protecting your energy and making sure you feel safe at work. Many hugs.
Eric Nieudan @ 2019-04-11 19:28:21
Scots should not be allowed to even mention accents, as I've said before. Take care of yourself - call in sick, talk to HR, don't let the arseholes win.
Jamie Prentice @ 2019-04-11 19:36:30
I'm sorry, that sucks.
Ian Borchardt @ 2019-04-12 02:35:58
With consulting it was never about the technical problems, it was always the politics, people, and personalities. I will add that HR is usually quite useless in these matters (their main job being to protect the company not the workers). But yes, never ever threaten. Instead say how you are threatened by his behaviour. And you are a giant of a man for making us this delicious and delectable lasagna!
Matthew Adams @ 2019-04-12 06:20:19
Can't offer advice, unless it's questionable romantic advice, but I can offer my sympathies and yeah, don't push yourself to hard over lasagna. It's good, and thank you!
Lloyd Neill @ 2019-04-12 11:39:28
Fuck man, sorry to hear it. If it helps any, we all know who the real “short man” is in this situation
Marcus Burggraf @ 2019-04-12 19:39:27
Shit man, that's horrid. Don't worry about this place, always take care of you first. We will still be here.
Ramanan S @ 2019-04-16 12:16:53
Agree that threatening to quit is a bad play. You should just keep that in your back pocket if things aren’t going your way and then quit if they aren’t doing anything. Toxic work life is toxic and will infect all areas of your life. There are so many tech jobs right now it feels, hopefully if things don’t improve here you find something else to your liking.
