I'm really looking forward to Game of Thrones being over so we can talk about its colonialist tropes. Because hoo boy.
Paolo Greco @ 2019-05-10 11:18:47
I'm all ears
Scott Martin @ 2019-05-10 12:49:52
I'm told that show may glorify sexual violence also.
Brian Ashford @ 2019-05-10 12:57:04
I don't know that Game of Thrones glorifies anything. It certainly isn't shy of using sexual violence to drive a narrative though, and that is plenty problematic.

@scott yeah I know, low hanging fruit. badum tish. So there's that moment where a sex worker plays the part of a sex worker kinda parodying the look of Denise and sexualizing/objectifying her for the audience inside the brothel. And Tyrion says "I guess this is some sort of wish-fulfillment for the clients" and then he studiously avoids looking straight at the TV audience... We've been re-binge-watching the whole thing to remind ourselves of where all the pieces are before we start the final season. The changes in pacing and expectations of the audience are kinda jarring when you run all the way through it in a short period - in particular you can see the costumes getting more ambitious, and there's a moment where its cultural cachet hits the big time and suddenly it's absolutely full of old British character actors in bit parts, and it's like you're going through some agent's rolodex or climbing a tree of influence - if we can get Mark Gatiss maybe Jonathan Pryce will sign. If Pryce is in, Richard E Grant's a sure thing and maybe we can get Jim Broadbent. The eldest likes the tighter pacing of seasons 6 and 7, he says that in season 4 he was starting to wonder whether it was worth the slog. I watch the revelations come tumbling out as we reach the tipping point of going from GRRM's published works into his slush file and I find myself missing just being on the road with Bronn and The Hound as a pair of sweary, disenchanting Charles Kuralts to GRRM's underbelly.

(so I am coming from a position of ignorance of everything in the current season. Posting now to see how many of these get subverted before we're done:) - Great White Messiah (female for novelty) - Arabs Don't Understand Freedom - Sisterhood Is Wise, But Men Are Strong - addendum; You Need A Chymical Wedding - Primitive Peoples Bow Down To What They Don't Understand (the Skobelev/Shock and Awe doctrine) - Women Are Powerful When Naked, Men When Clothed (also boosts sales) - Knowing Your Place Is The Ultimate Virtue - The Really Bad People Are Physically Marked (novelty - blue eyes)
Scott Martin @ 2019-05-10 13:50:17
OMG we have a thing this season when two characters will glance shyly at each other and we'll cheer, "We just got FANSERVICED." I will even miss fighting with it. It'll be a different world with it gone.

Tormund and Brienne are the New World a-forming. Only they will survive Ragnarok.

Fuck a guy who's famous for a "kill your darlings" aesthetic he left behind in the 20th Century. Read a fucking Lymond novel, or the Milo Manara Borgias comic for extra fratricide and incest.
Richard G @ 2019-05-11 03:47:09
There’s really no Manara girl in GoT. Even Denise doesn’t have the right noseless nose.
