Today in Lunchtime Dungeons: Changing their minds after last session, the players elected not to go through the map I'd just prepped. Instead, they went in another direction and got into a fight with a bunch of birdfolk wights to verify a myth about giant trees sometimes hiding portals into other worlds. And activated said portal, going I have not the faintest idea where... The good news: tonight I get to air my Planescape books :)

I love those sessions. Dammit why did I put this backdoor on the map? OK gang, your characters have the same names but different stats and now it’s Call of Cthulhu.

Haha! I wouldn't do that to my (still fairly newbie) players! I was looking at some books last night and I might mix Planescape and Spelljammer...

I was running Barrowmaze and the first character falls into an infinite pit. The next character throws themselves after the first! Soon they all go to explore this infinite void. WTF!? And so began my Traveller/Spelljammer/Planescape Frankenstein monster. It was good fun. I got to air all the books. All of them. 🥳

@alex that’s a clear signal to up the ante right there. “We trust you and we want to be amazed.”

Yeah. I really couldn't just say: sure thing! Y'all roll up new characters while I go make some tea, OK? Nope... Had to roll with the punches. 😅 https://alexschroeder.ch/wiki/2012-10-19_More_about_the_Mashup

Thanks for that, Alex! It's actually pretty much what I've decided to do: astral=phlogyston=space =) You can go anywhere if you know the right channel or portal. I'm toying with the idea of all the planes being "magical star systems", with their own universal laws, and layers as planets of various shapes. Mechanus is definitely a clockwork machine the size of a galaxy =) And soon enough I'll be showing the players a map of the planes from Planescape to confuse them =)

Good luck! My campaign went from 2010 to 2017, so I can recommend it. 😁

Wow! Don't know if we'll have that much stamina :)
