asking what they want to hear and then repeating it back is a genius bit of social engineering. If you said "they tell you whatever you want to hear" then the players would know for sure that this was the point you were making. But saying "yes they say that thing" leaves room for doubt. The players want to hear it because they're invested in it. They will be tempted to believe the victim is saying it because it's true.

I guess I'm glad that, although I've had players prone to waste things with a crossbow, nobody has yet stooped to torture.
